The Prodigal Son

Well, a few things have changed in the 11-months since I've posted:

1. My location is out of date... San Diego is the new base of operations.  I've been here since January.  I love it.  Absolutely fantastic.

2. My poker playing has gone down considerably... I played considerably when I moved out here, due to the lack of initial employment opportunities... actually ran at a pretty solid profit, combining online and live.  Cash, I'm a loser... but tourneys I was up.

But, my roll got too far extended so I haven't been able to play live for a while, as I'm trying to maintain a safe level of roll management.

3. Having started playing online again, man... my game is really, really, really off.  A mix of bad luck and bad play but I'm still hanging around somehow.  I might have to go read Harrington again or earn a considerable amount of disposable income.

August 24, 2008, 9AM: Played 1 hour, 30 minutes, Made $40.00 at Granville's House
$10 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (1st out of 7 Players)

i tried a little more beyond just drinking and aggroing (heard there were checkpoints out, so i kept the drinking to a minimum from that point on)

kept it aggressive, but a little tighter.  knew which players were letting me limp and which weren't... so tried to get in pots like that

hit a set of 4s (4s were my hand for the night, apparently... had them 3 times, won 3 pots) and won a nice 3-way pot.

got big stacked, my friend, the host, got semi-short early... but nothing to be too concerned about.  we started out with 5k... he had 1.5k with blinds at 50-100

he open jams in MP with that stack and those blinds... i'm in the BB, i look down at A-10... tank for a second, i call.  he has Q-4 and spikes a Q

goes on a ridiculous run... wins all ins with 10-7 against 9-9... tilts me a little later after i lose an all in pre-flop to a short stack with my J-J getting out-run by AK.

friend limps (he's a huge stack now, btw), kid who went all int he hand before goes all in again... i have A-9, i really want to call, but i have a feeling my friend is because his stack is huge and i don't want in with two players... so i fold... he calls with J-9 to race against 8-8

flop is 9-9-A.  i pee my pants at the ensuing near-triple up i would've had.

i get heads up short... lots of small pots back and forth, he's often betting jerry yang style... like... 4k into 1200 pots, etc.

he had about 3:1 on me, i limped with 5-6 on the button... flop came out 4-4-J, , he bet min, I called

turn was a 7...  he bet just about double min... i re-raised him x3 it, he called

river was a 9, he checked, i jammed, he folded.

few hands later, i hit a straight, slow played it, got all in on the river with it and took a lead

few hands after that i opened with K-10, he called, 9-6-3 flop, he opens, i jam on him, he calls with a 9-7... and i suck out on him on the turn.

skilled, i know.

August 24, 2008, 9AM: Played 1 hour, Lost $10.00 at Granville's House
$10 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (5th out of 7 Players)

i came out and played pretty aggro... showed a couple times too.  jammed on players with 3 flush draws, only hit one (the third is how i busted).

one hand 3 people limped on my bb, i had KQ (honestly the best hand i had during that game) and i opened pretty strong... about x5-6 the bb... fold, fold.  gets back to the sb who limped, he does the "screw it, i'm all in" line that i always dread hearing live when i raise.

i call because i'm getting like 4 - 1 on his short stack

he has AQ, suit.  SHIP to not me.

same guy saved me later.  i was short... pocket 4s in the bb... cutoff limps, he limps in my sb still... i jam with the 4s for about x8 the bb... both call

6-2-A flop... bad
A turn... good.
Q river... bad

both checked to the river, he jammed on the river... other guy folds, he turns over K-3.  SHIP.  other guy said he had a 6, and i would've busted.

i still busted a little later.

$10 Buy-In 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo Tournament (2nd out of 64 Players)

mixed feelings.

the good:

1) nice cash
2) MOSTLY played great at the final table
3) in a game other than hold'em that i enjoy

the bad:

1) wanted to be in bed 3 hours ago
2) have a headache
3) had to get very lucky around the 2/3rds way through point
4) lost to an aggro heads up who can't lay over cards down

okay... then i acted like a prick and insulted him.  whatever... guy was playing aggro and running like gang busters... was in 1st heads up cause his 10s cracked Aces pre-flop... i jammed a 7-3-7 flop with A-4 after his raise and he folded, so i had the lead in that previous hand

anyways, we're short, so...

well, shit.  just tried to copy the hand and the tourney window closed

i wake up with aces... i have 15k he has 50k... blinds are 600 - 1200...  i limp in for 600

he jams, i call

he has AK

flop has K-K-X
turn X
river X

guy cracked aces twice pre-flop in about a 10 hand span.

August 20, 2008, 8PM: Played 4 hours, Lost $20.00 at Full Tilt
No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (3rd out of 6 Players)

playing a lot just to make iron man for the month... have to hit 50 ftps a day 9 of the 11 remaining days of this month... sounds bad... but, at one point, i had to do it 14 of the next 16 days this month, so i've made some progress

couple brutal days at work, so i was tired today and my game suffered for it... was given two great opportunities to do big damage at one of my lovely mtt sngs... but the lack of really thinking much, being half out of it... didn't play my best today.  ran pretty nasty bad at razz too.

August 18, 2008, 11PM: Played 2 hours, Made $100.00 at Full Tilt
$5 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (2nd out of 45 Players)

had a great night... won a little playing razz, won a couple SNGs, finished 2nd in a MTT... cards fell good.

the mtt was crazy because no one was busting, hour in in a 45 person mtt and there were 15 players left, i was short so i couldn't do much... kept shoving to get in pots

i ran well... i won a couple races... couple key ones at the final table, i was nearly crippled short and won a race with 3-3 vs. QJ... other than that, i won with good hands... semi-short early, jammed with AQ, out-boarded AK... other than that, i did well... i got sucked out once late, so i dont feel as bad about sucking out once earlier

final hand we're 3 handed, i'm in 2nd with 19k, 3rd has 12k, 1st has 38k... 3rd is on the button... he jams... i'm sb, i over jam... bb tanks, for i dont know what reason, and he calls...

AQ for button vs. my AJ vs. leader's KK

A-K-8 flop... 8 on the turn gave me ONE out... blank river and i was happy with the result the way the tournament was going.

i'm happy with tonight.
