March 8, 2008, 12PM: Played 6 hours, 36 minutes at Mardi Gras - Butte
$235 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (1st out of 26 Players)

Jesse had auto 10%

1 Unconditional Rebuy, 1 Addon

Before the tournament even started I had two people in the room wanting to buy a piece of my action.  One said, you are a clear favorite to win after looking at the field.

Well it was just that.  I was up against a field of donkeys with a select few decent players.

For the 1st 3 rounds, I just kinda held onto my chips played 3 hands, winning 2 of them and didnt even make a hand (even the ones I folded).

After the dinner break, I figured is when the tournament started.  No more rebuy, no more addon.  I had 3600, with the blinds at 50-100.  Had a nice stack the whole tournament.

1 hand that I played that shocked another decent player at the table.  I am dealt A3o in the cutoff, with blinds 50-100.  Everyone mucks to me and I make my usual raise.  The button and the sb called.  Flop comes ATx rainbow. Sb checks, and being kinda fearful of the sb (Fairly tight player) having a bigger ace, I check behind him.  The button fires out a 900 bet, and the sb folds.  My initial instinct is that he called with KQ flopped a gutshot and is trying to take it down right there.  I take a moment and think this through, and instead of raising to get him off his hand, I am confident that he will continue betting the hand, and I all I need to do is fade the 4 outter.  So I call.  Turn comes a brick, once again I check and he fires 900.  I pause and think ok is this the time to come over the top and not see a river.  I just call, deciding that he will probably fire at it one more time.  River comes a Q.  I once again check, and he once again fires 900 at me.  Now, Im actually thinking fuck, what if his KQ that I put him on was KJ and I let him catch his gutterball.  I count down whats left of my stack and I would have a little over 1300 with the blinds moving to 75-150 in a couple hands, which is still enough for me to play with if thats the case.  I call, he shows KQ.

That hand gives me a nice healthy stack, and I hold on to it for the rest of the tournament, becoming chip leader and staying chip leader till the final table, where I lost the chip lead once where there is a raise, then allin, then allin, then allin.  Initial raiser mucks, but the 3 hands QQ, AKo, QQ, with an AK flop.

When we got down to 4 handed I regained the chip lead.  Down to 3, almost all even stacked, and then I slowly took off from there, grinding at the other two stacks.

One thing that I heard after the tournament was over, which really kinda pisses me off, and will detour me from playing in another tournament there, is that the owner of the game was skimming off the rebuys and addons.  One person watching this the whole time, figured he skimmed almost 500 off the prize pool, costing me 200.  I guess he did it in his previous tournament, so this person wanted to watch to confirm.  It didnt surprise me after he told me, since I thought 1st was a little low.  I think the gaming commission might need to hear about this, to prevent it from happening in the future, esp if I wanna go play another tournament there.  I like the tournament cause the buyin isnt too bad, and I dont have to travel to play in it.  Plus the field is limited to 3 tables.

March 1, 2008, 1PM: Played 7 hours, 30 minutes at Crystal Card Room - Billings
$125 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (2nd out of 70 Players)

Short Stack Master....

Only 2X was I at a healthy stack during the tournament, besides the beginning.

Until the first break, I was able to turn my starting 3K into 6.6K.  With 40 players left this was nicly above average.  I get involved with 66, with a 945 flop being somewhat agressive with it being in last position.  Then I am forced to let it go on the turn.  Then I ran into a lady that just couldnt let T8o go.  Now my stack is just above 2k with the blinds 2-4 ante 50.

A few hands go by and im in the cutoff with AKo, there are 3 limpers, the 2 blinds, and 8 antes.  I go all in for what I have left.  Everyone lets it go except the person right on my right.  He has AK also.  So my stack just grabs a small increase, but its now enough where I can pick at a blind.

I build my stack back to the 6.5K, but the blinds are now 4-8 with a 100 ante, maybe 150.  Several times I was able to steal 2 sets of blinds each round with a bet of 2950.  One guy asked what is the extra 50 for, a tax?

Then I run into the donkey (playing over 90% of the hands he was dealt).  He crippled me down to the point of only having 3x the bb.  I am able to recover from this, and now find my stack at almost 10k, with 12 left, and the blinds 6-12, 200 ante.  2 people go very quickly and we are down to the final table of 10.

7 players get cash, and the other 3 get $60 Chip cards for the cash games.

A whole new setting, but I quickly find my spot to pick up a round of blinds each time.  I dont get too many chips invovled until we got down to 7 players, which quickly became 6.  We played for about 3 rounds, 6 handed as there were lots of chips in play and a nice stucture.

When we got down to 4, this was a fun setting.  I have another good player right to my left, the donkey to his left, and a rock to my right.  So every time I make a move the good player wont get involved as his chip stack has been slowly diminishing.

Several times the good player layed down his hand after I made a move for most of my chips, showing it to the crowd and then announcing it after play was over.  A few times it was a big lay down for most of the donks in the tournament or donks online.  But in each situation it was the right move.  Each time I would tell him the percentages and who was the favorite.  Only once was he a favorite and it was a 55/45 situation.

During the final table, I turned my 10k stack into 50k and then back down to 10k, once again running into the donkey.  But even with the blinds 1500-3k and 2-4K, I was still able to convert it back into 50K, over the next 2 rounds.

Then right before break, A board of QT6 rainbow comes.  The strong player, goes allin, the donkey calls allin and the rock with the most chips overcalls.  All have Qx, with the rock having the best Q, and busting them both.

Now is break time, and he has me roughly 3:1 as I have 56K and there are 210K in play. The prize money is 1st - $2450, 2nd - $1750, with the $200 for the last longer still in play.  I look at this and am extremely tired after being up for ~30hrs.  So I decide to make him an offer.  Take give me $1950, leaving him with $2250 and splitting the $200.  He takes it with out thinking.  So with the $900 difference from 1st to 2nd, he is giving me a 1/3, making the difference now $300.  So with a 3:1 chip lead he gave me a 2:1 deal.  I am still not sure if this was a good deal or not, as I think I could have outplayed him and taken 1st.  But that is for my next Rambling Entry.
