who else thinks..

...the coors light ad 'wingman' is the best commercial ever made...it came up the other night when one of my buddies had a chance to score with a hot chick and I offered to try and cut loose the anchor for him...the chubby friend, and of course my buddy was too young to have even seen the commercial, why do I hang out with these 19 year old clownshoes?

the bud light commercial where the guy is on an island and keeps getting the bottles and then goes to the guys house and punches him is pretty good too

Sick and Tired

I'm so fucking sick and tired of putting all my money in when I have at the very LEAST at 60/40 chance and LOSING. Sure, I get lucky every now and then but it seems like I can't get past breaking even. It really sucks right now because I feel that I am playing some of the best poker I've ever played...

Las Vegas

I'm taking my sister to Vegas the third week of June for her big 21st B-Day. Aside from playing cards, does anyone have any suggestions that would help make her B-Day a special occasion??? She likes to drink, party, dance, etc. and is open to anything.

Thanks for your help.

the last week of poker

i haven't played great but have also run pretty bad.  one thing i definitely need to do is increase the length of time that i have been sitting at a table.  lately it has been sit for 30 mins and then go off to whatever i have to do that day.  i played a play money razz tourny with 33 people in it this afternoon to blow off some steam from the cash tables and won so that has inspired me to play a little bit of real razz to change it up a little bit.

Probabilities

I was just looking over a ost from NateDawg where he poses the question: " I counted 14 pairs given to players 7 hands in a row. Jesus, what is the perecntage of that happening, an average of two pocket pairs dealt each hand, 7 hands in a row???".  So being a mathematician, I thought I would find out the answer, the following is a brief examination of the problem and a brief explanation as to why it is not as uncommon as one might believe.
First, the probability of being dealt a pair in holdem is 5.88% or .0588.  Assuming this holds for each player sitting at a table, without knowing what the other cards are, using some basic combinatorics and the binomial distribution it is easy to compute the probabilities of a single table being dealt 0, 1, 2, 3, etc. pairs during a single hand.
Since he is playing on FT and it has 9 handed tables, I used that for the calculations.  The probabilities of the table being dealt a specific number of pairs follows:
  0------.579612
  1------.32589
  2------.081439
  3------.011871
  4------.001112
  5------.00007
  6------.000003
7,8,9----.000003 (combined)

Using this we can see that the probability of a table being dealt 2 or more pairs in a given hand is .094498, or approximately 9.5% of the time.  Now, since each hand is an independent random event we only need to take this to the 7th power to find the probability that the the event occurs, .000000067 which roughly equates to a 7 in a 100,000,000 chance.  So from this perspective it does indead look like an unlikely occurance.
Lets now take into accout that at any given time there are thousands of tables playing at one time on FT.  Currently on FT (Monday afternoon) there are 9000 tables.  On a weekend or evening there are many more.  For the sake of arguement lets say there are 9000 holdem tables going at the time you decide to join a game. There is a .000606 chance of seeing this occurance at one of the tables at any given time.  This is slightly over a 3 in 5000 chance.  For camparisons sake, the probability of completing a royal flush in holdem is .000154, nearly 4 times more unlikely, yet all of us have seen this occur at a table we have been playing at.
Here we can see the beauty/insanity of playing online poker: we see situations occur what seems like regularly online, that we may never encounter live.  Being able to handle these improbable events is what makes the successful online player.
So next time you marvel at a run of cards or the seemingly impossibility of a set of events that occur at your table online, remember it is a virtual certainty that this exact thing is happening somewhere else in the online poker world.

who to blame?

well... it's about 5-6 hours after i shit away my roll i spent a hours and hours building up over the month of may...

however, as opposed to some others who've hit felt before, i'm not going to sit here and blame someone other than me for making a mistake... it's not poker's fault, it's my fault

it's personal responsibility... and last night, i was irresponsible.

am i going to join gamblers anonymous? no. losing is part of the game, i picked a bad time to play with a faulty mentality and that's what sharks wait for... in the grand scheme of things, losing 550 isn't going to cripple me... i did it before, i'll do it again... and, considering i built it from freerolls and low limit games, i feel confident i'll do it again (build up a roll, that is :) )

...or, considering i have a job now, actually load up some money

do i feel like i wasted all of that time in may? no, i think my game has improved tremendously over that time and i'll benefit from it in live games, and online when i get back to it soon

i think it's situations like these, at higher-higher limits, where people look for someone to blame... that's how people have a reason to introduce legislation for some horrible 'vice' like poker...

but, when you're drunk... can't you make bad decisions:

1) driving?
2) getting laid?
3) doing a whole assortment of other things with a bad state of mind that cost money and/or involve other people?

of course. but i don't think having sex is going to be illegal anytime soon no matter how many horrible drunk hookups you make

just time to start back at it and do my best to stick to my cardinal rule of staying ultra-low limit, or just avoiding online poker totally, while drunk... horrible decision? yes.  life ruining? hardly.  in the end, it's just money.
