When I first started playing poker, I had no idea what bankroll management was. I just sat in whichever games were open at the stakes I wanted to play, even if I barely had enough money in my bankroll to cover the buy-in. I worked my way up the ranks by jumping to the next level as soon as I had enough money to pay for a single buy-in. This strategy worked amazingly well for a while, but once I reached stakes where the quality of play was much higher than I was used to, my lack of bankroll management almost proved disastrous.
After playing thousands of hands and building a bankroll large enough to play in almost any game I wanted, I managed to lose almost all of it in the span of a few days. Many professional poker players end up going broke multiple times in their careers, and this is almost always due to a lack of bankroll management. The players who will be around forever are the ones who have learned this lesson.
Although painful, some good did come from these experiences: I learned the importance of bankroll management. Now instead of playing at the highest limits that my bankroll allows, I play in lower stakes games where I still feel like I’m playing for a significant amount of money. Playing as low as $2/$4, $3/$6, and $5/$10 No-Limit, I’m able to play a completely objective game. Because I’m not afraid to lose a $1,000 in a single hand, I can make a lot of moves that I probably wouldn’t make at higher stakes and if I fail the loss hardly affects me. This gives me an enormous advantage over opponents who would be devastated by a $1,000 loss.
There’s an old saying that goes "scared money is dead money," and it’s true. You simply can’t consistently win at poker if you’re playing with money you’re afraid to lose. To combat this, I like to play in games with buy-ins 40 to 50 times smaller than the size of my bankroll. Ten buy-in downswings are common in poker, and it’s comforting to be prepared for such variance.
By observing proper bankroll management and playing at stakes your bankroll can handle, you’ll be able to limit the impact variance has on your game. You’ll be able to endure a ten buy-in downswing without going on tilt and you won’t be crushed when you hit the cashier button and see that your balance has dropped dramatically.
One of the biggest problems with playing at stakes that are too high for your bankroll is not being able to minimize the impact of variance. If you choose to play in a game that could wipe out your entire bankroll by losing four buy-ins, you’re not going to be able to get involved in many situations where you only have a slight edge. Playing with this sort of restraint isn’t good for a poker player.
In an attempt to lower variance, poker players who are under rolled for the game they’re in give up a lot of their EV because they’re playing scared. If you happen to spot one of these players, you can easily exploit their fear.
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. I recently played heads up against a player who was obviously playing with scared money. He was one of those players looking for an excuse to fold unless he could show the nuts. Taking advantage of his tendency to fold all but the very best hands, I picked every marginal situation I could find and attacked. Any time I found a spot where I believed he thought I couldn’t possibly be bluffing, I would do just that.
In one such hand he bet $150 on the river when the board showed a pair and three cards to a flush. There was $300 in the pot, and I moved all in for my last $300. It was only $150 more for him to call, but he folded because it was a spot where he must have thought there was no possible way I could be bluffing. Discovering this weakness in his game made for a very profitable session for me, but I wouldn’t have discovered it if I hadn’t been willing to shove all my chips into the middle in marginal situations – I never would have done that if the stakes had been higher or I had a smaller bankroll.
If you are properly bankrolled for whichever game you choose to play, you’ll be able to make the optimal play in any situation that might occur without having to decide if it’s a high-variance move or not. By playing in games where the loss of ten buy-ins in a row would hardly put a dent in your bankroll, you’ll be able to maximize your EV, enjoy less dramatic swings in your bankroll, and celebrate an increase in your win rate, which in poker is a recipe for success.

 none of my steal attempts worked at any stage. it was one of those tourneys where nothing goes right. when i had no hand and bet i got raised and when i did have a hand i got called and missed the flop and then would get checkraised everytime i continuation bet. managed to stay alive by doubling up 2 times: with KQh a guy slowplayed his set of 7s and let me hit a gutshot strt and later i had KK vs JJ. but i lost a lot of hands, way more than i won. got it in from late position with TT vs JJ for about 12 bb.

Like 10 hands before the above hand I was in 1st and there were like 20 people left. Then this crazy aggro who ended up getting 3rd and was actually pretty good, took most of my chips. This coinflip win was HUGE.

I played the above hand geniosly in my opinion. When it got folded to me in the SB I min-raised whereas I had been 2.5Xing every other hand. I did it becuase the guy was pretty weak/passive, so I wanted to squeeze value out of him and get him to call. When he called the and the flop hit, I knew if I checked to him he would ty and make some sort of bluff (he had done it before). I did, then he bet pot, which kind of scared me because I had noted him as that being strength, but there was no way I was folding in that spot. Ship it!

$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em
I was totally in the bag, and having a great time with my friend Greg in town. I still played good poker, I was totally overbetting every big hand I had and the donkeys always paid me off. Thank you! For all I won, I still didn't have much to show for it tho - I gave weasel $200 (Jessie took $100 of it off my tab so now I only owe jessie $100), I covered $150 of Greg's loss, and paid my Mom and Dad the rest so I was still broke LOL. Apparently, COB was mad at me because I was laughing at him when he took a bad beat. Even tho I really like the guy, he's got to get a little tuffer skin if he is going to play this game.
The game is fun when you win, but it seems like if I'm having fun - I have a better chance of winning! HMMMM!
Just relax and enjoy the game COB! Bye the way, u r not playing your game of poker right now (I don't know why) but you r going to go broke if you keep playing the way u were on Friday and Saturday

 swoop swoop.... crazy game a drunk guy risked 850 on a flush draw vs a set and he won, sickness the guy freaked out lol. The guy waS so wasted and hittin shitty for the table. Got lucky in a few spots and ran into a flush over flush. One hand i floped the NUTZ and lol i threw a small bet outthere and it got raised RR and i went all in vs two pair and my str8 held up. There are alot of regulars out there and its fun to play with some good players, who respect the game... Im not gonna play limit nearly as much its childs play compared to the real cash games.

tripled up on the first hand with KK vs T2 vs JT on a T high flop. rode a big stack the whole way until just outside of the money. some crazy shoves 12bb in early position with KJo and i wake up with AK in the sb. and of course he hit his 3 outer. i blind out. with very high blinds and most people short stacked, there had been significant action on every hand. i pick up KK in middle position and min raise, everyone folds. couple hands later i pick up KK in bb and everyone folded around! and that was literally the first time that had happened in 2 hours. damn. playing hand4hand, everyone was playing tight and stalling, so i open shove the button with 47o, but that doesnt matter cuz one of the blinds has to wake up with an absolute monster to call off. bb stalls, runs out his entire timebank and then calls with AK and i double him. just flat unlucky that he has a hand there. i lose half my stack and limp into the money. lame. i didnt play badly, again the cards didnt fall my way.

cards ran dead. won my first pot 3 hrs in on a river bluff when i missed my flush and the board double paired. never got involved in any pots that had been raised, by saw several flops with limped hands like suited connectors. never hit anything, so i didnt lose much. won a decent pot with AQc on board of 2cKdJdTd. won a small pot with QQ. those were the only 3 hands i won. bust hand: i have $221 behind and pick up AA. 3 people limp for the $4 button staddle and i make it $21 from the hijack. ricky instacalls next to me and 2 others call, $90 pot. flop T42 rainbow. i bet $30. ricky instaraises to $150. we get it in. he has TT i lose...i'm not upset that i lost or that he outflopped me. and i dont think i could have layed it down. i just wish i had taken more time to go over the hand in my head and at least give myself a chance to make a good lay down, which i didnt do.
