September 4, 2009, 4PM: Played 6 hours, 30 minutes, Made $110.00 at Sandia
$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

I was up $450 at one point, but hit a dry spell that led right into a tough hand.

My third hand in and I have KsJs in the big blind and there is one limper to the button who raises to $12.  The limper and I called.  Flop is As 8s 4s.  Sweet.  I check.  Limper checks. Button bets $10 into $33.  I am confident she has a big Ace.  I raised to $25 and both players call.  Turn is the 10h.  I lead out for $40 into $108.  Limper raises to $100.  Button folds and I go all-in for $33 more which gets called.  He showed a smaller flush and I doubled up.

A very drunk guy sat down at the table.  He was raising every hand to $5 or $7.  Drunk guy UTG makes it $7.  Folded to me on the button with 99.  I raise to $27 and drunk guy calls.  Flop is 8c 4c 2h.  Drunk checks.  I bet $40 into $56 and drunkie calls.  Turn is the 10s.  I am pretty sure he has a flush draw.  He checks and I bet $100 into $136.  He then goes all-in for $60 more.  That was a little worrying, but I call still thinking he has a flush draw.  The river is the 8d.  He shows Q3o haha and I win a nice pot.

The is a raise from middle position to $12.  Button, a very loose aggressive big stack, calls.  I call with Js10s out of the big blind.  Flop comes 10h As 7s.  I led out for $15 into $33.  Both players call.  The turn is the Jh.  I bet $65 into $78.  Raiser folds and the button raises to $165.  He is aggressive, but I think he has me at that point with either Aces up or 89 for the straight.  I do think I have 12-15 outs and I call.  The river is a 3h.  I check and he bets $75 into $408.  I don't know if I can fold there.  I think I am beat, but it is a big pot.  He shows KQo. ouch.

$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

tough table, first hand i played was QQ utg, pussied out after the flop had an A and i slowed down and villain raises big.  i put him on KK/AA and folded and he proudly said TT.  put me on tilt then really aggro guy two to my left made a gangster call on me and ate up rest of my buy in. next buyin hit a straight which made the other guys flush and then another big one he obviously made his flush after i had made a straight on the turn and that was that... shitty, combination of some bad plays and bad luck = a losing session.

September 1, 2009, 7PM: Played 4 hours, 15 minutes, Made $340.00 at Sandia
$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

I was down this entire session.  I took beat after beat.  Lost with AA, KK, QQ.  Flopped a straight, got flushed.  It was a terrible session until I hit a monster hand.

UTG raises to $10.  Three players call to me in the small blind with 3d5d.  I call and the big blind calls.  Flop comes 4d 6d 2d.  Sick flop.  I check.  UTG bets $75 into $56.  Cutoff player, Umberto, calls.  Umberto is crazy tight post flop so I am excited to see him call.  I call.  Rest of the table folds. Turn is 3h.  I check again.  UTG moves all-in for $75 into $276 and Umberto calls.  I have $80 after the $75 call and can't decide to shove now or on the river.  Umberto has me covered and he must have a big hand.  I just call.  The board pairs on the river and I move all-in $80 into $501.  Umberto folds.  He later told me he had 24.  UTG shows QQ.

August 31, 2009, 10PM: Played 3 hours, 45 minutes, Made $435.00 at Sandia
$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

I got up $170 right away then lost it all and finally made it back plus some.  Funny first two hands.  Limp with K10.  Blind raises to $12 and I muck.  Flop comes K 10 7.  Weird though the blind checked and the bet the turn big.  Really could have been a set.  The next hand I muck 10c7c.  Flop is three clubs and there is a bunch of action and everyone folds to an all-in.  I think I am beat there too.

Up $170 - Hit two sets.  I played them pretty straight forward.  Raised on the flop with one and bet the other.  Patty paid me off with AJ on a Q A 2 10 Q board.  I had 22.  Lang paid me off with 99 on an 3 4 10 7 K board.  I had 44.

Lost it all - There are 3 limpers to me on the button with AsJh.  I raise to $12.  Everybody calls and there are 6 of us to the flop of Kd Qs 7s.  Checks to Patty in the cutoff who bets $10 into $68.  This really felt like a little pot builder bet with a flush draw.  I called to see if the field thinned at all.  Two more callers and the turn is the 10d.  I believe in miracles.  Checked to me and I fire $50 into $108.  Richie calls and the river is the 2d.  He checks to me and I fire $30 into $168.  He min raises to $60 and I call.  He shows the Qd7d.  I asked him why he was such a bastard and didn't raise on the flop to save me the trouble.

Made it back - Maniac entered the table.  Raised every single hand.  Saw him play 105o, 92s, and 49o to the river.  Limped with AJ and again with AQ, he raised and then I squeezed everyone else off with $35.  He still called and I bet him off on the flop.

Four limpers to me and I call with 6h7h.  7 callers to the Maniac who raises to $5.  Everyone calls to Lang on the button who makes it $10 and everyone calls again.  Flop is 7s 7d Jd.  Checks to me.  I bet $20 into $76.  Richie calls in the small blind and the maniac makes it $60.  Here I think the maniac has a flush draw, a jack, or maybe a 7.  I call to gauge Richie's strength.  I call and Richie folds.  Turn is the Qs.  Maniac checks and I bet $40 into $176.  The check through me for a loop.  The maniac rarely slows down and I was concerned he filled up which caused him to check. He calls.  River is the 3h.  He checks, I bet $40 into $256.  He goes all in for $80 more into $336.  I call.  I am expecting to lose to the maniac here, but he is so crazy and flips over J2 off-suit. Gotta love it.

$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

Roller coaster Session.  Got up $180 right away thanks to AA, KK and KK again. Unfortunately I lost all of it in a big hand.

First hand I was dealt was AA in the cutoff.  Three people limp to me and I make it $12.  Two limpers call.  Flop is 8s 5s 4h.  First limper bets $30 into $37.  Other limper folds and I call.  Turn is the 3h.  Opponent bets $50 into $97.  I raise all-in for $90 more.  He folded and showed 1010.  Off to a good start.

Limp UTG with AK.  Folds to cutoff who moves all-in for $10.  Button calls and I call.  Flop is As Kc 10h.  Great flop.  I don't think the button is calling with any hand other than QJ that beats me.  I bet $15 into $29 and the button calls.  Turn is 3h.  I bet $20 into $59.  He raises to $70.  He has $100 left and I am debating whether it is QJ, K10, or A10.  He would have reraised with 1010, KK, or AA.  I have played with him before and I know he doesn't need the nuts to get it all-in.  I move him all-in for his last $100.  He instacalls and shows QJ.  Ugh.  $459 pot down the drain.

$20 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (5th out of 9 Players)

More dubious play.  Not quite as bad as that discussed in my previous post, but still pretty dismal.  Actually, the truth is I lost in a 45-55 coin flip where I went in with the slight advantage, but it probably wasn't worth risking my pot right then and there.  I wasn't quite pot committed with 1000 left in chips (I had 1300 in the pot before calling all-in).  I'm pretty good at scrambling back to a reasonable position when the blinds are getting to the nose bleed range, so I should have thought more about folding.  But, the pot odds really did merit a call so I guess I shouldn't be too upset about this one; that's poker.  On a completely different note, why did I have to eat that piece of cake.  Friggin pig.

$20 Buy-In No-Limit Omaha Tournament (9th out of 9 Players)

I set a new standard for moronic play in this outing.  Loose calls early on leading to quick folds.  The coup de grace came when I called down three consecutive cards waiting for I don't know what.  I had AJ with zilch paired on the board.  It didn't occur to me that he or she would be holding pocket 10s.  It would be one thing if I had opened the pot with a raise and everyone folded to the big blind who called based, as usual, on pot odds.  But in this case I called a 3xBB raise and then proceeded to ATM my way right out of the tourney.  Not my best showing.  I attribute some of the loose playing to the fact that I was engaged in three other tables simultaneously, where I had taken significant leads in one-table Sit-N-Gos (you won both, ultimately).  So, despite the fact that this game came in the context of a winning session overall, it was still weak play.  On the other hand, if we had called down and I took a huge pot with AJ high I'd be patting myself on the back, but that would only encourage inappropriate play in the future.  So, in some sense, I'm pleased this one didn't work out.

August 25, 2009, 4PM: Played 7 hours, Made $360.00 at Sandia
$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

Had a rough time for a winning session.  Was down the whole session really.  Every time I won one hand, it felt like I lost five others.  Had two big suck outs and two nicely played hands.  Had a misread that cost me a bit too.

Misread - I have Js8s in the big blind.  UTG+2 raised to $8.  He was raising to $12 every time he had a big hand.  The button, James, who is a very loose calling station, called and I did as well.  I played a lot of of 10-20 limit with him back in the day.  He is a competent player capable of bluffing.  The flop was Jd 6d 9s.  I checked and the continuation bet was set at $10 into $23.  The button and I called.  The turn was a 3h.  I bet $20 into $51 and the original raiser folded.  The button called.  The river was a 7h and I checked.  He fired out $45 into $91 quickly and I right away felt like it was a bluff on a missed flush draw.  The only hand I was worried about was 810 open-ender.  I called and he showed AJ.

Suck Out #1 - Bea is an older regular at Sandia that plays fairly loose and aggressive.  There were two limpers and she made it $7.  I had AsJd and I re-raised to $21.  She then raised it again to $42.  That sent the alarm bells off but it was $21 into $64. She was playing $100 behind and I decided to see the flop.  The flop was Qs 10h 9c.  She bet $25 into $85 and it just felt like a weak bet.  I pushed all-in with the semi-bluff for $75 more into $114 and she thought about it before making a good call with AA.  Luckily the turn was Ks.  No Jack on the river and I took down a nice pot.

Suck Out #2 - Two limpers to the Hijack who opened for $10.  I have JJ on the button and raised to $25.  The original raiser then re-raised to $50.  He had $75 behind and again I was faced with neeeding to hit a had against a min-raiser.  He is not going to get away from AA or KK. with only $75 and the pot already $103.  I call.  The call is still borderline.  I am 4 to 1 with maximum implied odds of 6 to 1.  Fortunately the flop was J22.  I checked, he went all-in, and I called.  Avoided and ace and looked lucky again.

Nice Hand #1 - Played against James again I limped under the gun with QhQd.  This has been how I have been playing mid to large pairs lately.  Hoping to get a squeeze out of it.  It folded to James on the button who raised to $7.  The blinds folded and I re-raised to $22.  He called and the flop came 8c 3s 4h.  I bet $30 into $43 and he called.  The turn was a 3h.  I again bet $30 into $103 and he called.  The river was a 6c.  I bet $40 into $163 and I was having trouble placing him on a hand.  I didn't think he would continue the hand without a pair.  I was concerned he was playing KK or AA in an unorthodox way or that he had a set.  I almost expected him to shove on the river.  He called and did not show.  He said he had a mid pair.

Caught a monster and got paid off.  Limped UTG with 55.  A very poor player raised to $10.  He rarely raised and I figured him for a big hand.  Cutoff called, Button called, and I did.  Flop was Qh 6c 5s.  I led out for $15 into $39.  He min-raised to $30 and I was feeling good.  Thinking he might have AA or KK.  Turn was a 5 and gave me quads.  I checked and he bet $50.  I called.  River was a 3c.  I checked again and he bet $80.  I put him all-in for $50 more and he called.  He said he had QJ which I am amazed he was okay with jamming it in with, but like I said he was a very poor player.

Another one you should have cashed in.  Although you were a small stack (a little over 2000 chips) you were still right in there.  You made a stupid play that cost you half your stack and were forced to go all in.  Although it was a bad beat it was a reasonable call to your all in shove because it was the big stack who could afford to take the risk even if the pot odds weren't there.  He hit a pair on the river to take it though you went into the showdown (preflop) with the advantage (you had a pocket pair and everyone folded to the this guy who had 10/Ko).

You were put out early here.  Although you had the best hand (top pair, top kicker) and the guy who went all in made a ridiculous call, again the question arises weather it really makes sense to put all your chips at risk so early on.  The benefit of doing so, obviously, is that you will likely double up much of the time.  But, you will frequently be wiped clean too.  I'm beginning to lean toward folding unless I really believe I have the nuts (although I did here).  Normally I'm concerned about hidden pocket pairs that have hit for trips - that's normally what puts me out early when I'm betting all in on top pair top kicker - but crazy calls that hit for straights and flushes are a problem too.  Again, I think sticking to the idea of small hand = small pot is probably the equation that I ought to follow.
