December 8, 2007, 2PM: Played 6 hours, Made $210.00 at Limelight
$3 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

Small stack goes all in, i have straight draw, and flush draw so I call $30 and there's another caller.  There's about $130 in pot, and the river comes A.  I now have a pair with 4 kicker, but missed flush/straight draws.  One player is already all in, and I check and opponent bets $25.  He has to have A with bigger kicker or already hit two pairs.  I know that he knows that he has to beat the all in player.  So I fold and to my surprise, he takes this $25 side bet and folds immediately and lets the other guy take the pot.  Very very strange play and come to find out he knows the other player.  I should have called the floor, but I'm not sure there's much recourse for that type of collusion.

All in all, a good night, but did chase a bit too much at end of night.  Was up $750 as one point.

$500 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (99th out of 224 Players)

most players would have gone broke on this hand: start with 2000 chips, a player that was next to me the day before and finished 14th was at my starting table again. we talked enought the previous play that we respected each others game. he knew i was tight and if i was betting that i had it. he never saw me bluff and all i showed down was AK, KK and QQ. he had raised my bb several times in the early going, and i let him have it everytime, even with hands that i probably could have called with. i knew that i was setting him up for a big bluff. he limps in early position, several players limp for 25 and i take a flop from the button with J8c. flop comes K97, one club. he leads into the field for 75, folds to me, i make a raise with my gutshot to 200. he calls. turn is Ac. now i can actually make a hand. he checks and i take my free card, not wanting to get in too deep. he could have a monster. when he checks the turn, i put him on a set. river is 7c. i hit my flush, which he could never put me on, but the board paired. he leads out for 600 in a 500 pot. i only call. he shows me AA for a boat!. not only did i pick a terrible spot to pull one off, but i actually made a hand and paid off his very deceptive play. later, as a very short stack, i shove from the hijack with Q9c for 550 with blinds at 50-100. button wakes up with QQ. flop is KJT. i get very lucky to double up! stole a couple pots here and there. with blinds at 100-200 and 25 ante, folds to me on button. i shove for 1775 with TT. bb woke up with AQs and i lose the race. bust.

Low-limit poker vs. Montana NL poker

This seems to be one of the major issues with Montana and poker as it evolves over time.

I listen (mind you I'm usually working or trapped) to these poeple from all different skill levels/experiences of all types of poker games and I can't decide which game is better to play in terms of making the most money: low-limit hold'em or montana NL hold'em ($300 pot cap, if the pot is made before the river, all players just roll thier hands over and they bring the board and whoever wins wins).

The big detail I keep hearing is protection of "big hands". Now most of the debate I'm exsposed to is over "why is 36 off cracking my black aces EVERY TIME?" Now it's obvious to me how these low-limit games work. You get 9 players at a table with maybe one or two of them who have a clue, and then the majority of the table is made up of compulsive bad gamblers/donkeys just having fun. I've logged lots of hours playing that game and have seen very consistent positive results.

Now lets look at the NL game. You get a few different people at the table. Your 'entertainment' players typically stay away from this game since they don't want to lose thier bankroll on one hand. However, the remaining players at the table are still bad compulsive gamblers with a dose of agression. I don't see a significant difference in how bad or good this game is played. I still watch the black aces get stomped by A-wheel, 36 off, K9 suited.

So which game is really more profitable? Yes you can go on the heat and win $1000 at the NL table where you will never do that in one session in a 3-6 holdem game. But you're also not going to lose $150 on one hand when you make all the right desicions and the donkey calls and cracks you anyways. Also, you can read most any poker book and they all have some comment on how much a 'successful' player should be winning in a paticular limit poker game, but I've never read anything about how much you should expect to win at a NL cash game table.

PS: if you see me in real life and feel the need to tell me about your "bad beats", first, remove your head from your ass and have a nice piping hot cup of shut the fuck up. Log your bad beats, dont force people to listen to them.

Account Sharing

Looks like someone just lost a $200k win by having his buddy in Europe finish off the $1M tourney he started in NYC:

A lot of this goes on, but you need to take risk/reward into account.  As the size of your winnings go up, the likelihood that you will be caught sharing your account goes up.  What this means is that, as your expected win goes up, your motivation to share your account goes down.  The obvious conclusion is that if you are willing to share your account, it probably means you aren't planning on doing very well at it.

November 29, 2007, 12AM: Played 45 minutes, Made $820.00 at Chair Casino
$30/60 Omaha Hi-Lo

So I have to admit.  It was my birthday todya, and I was sonewhat it a bad mood, as this was the first birthday I have spent, completely alone.  I enjoyed a nice ribeye steak at my local hang out, then went for a few drink at a couple of local bars.

I didn't get drunk and just wanted to come home and run away from it all, as I started to deal with a bit a depression from the past year.

I should not have played this high of a limit but I said WTF! I will ride the wave as long as the waves are good.

Made some good cash, playing semi aggressive, short handed, which I love.  Decided that I would take the win and cash some more funds out.

Still need to be cautious, as I really want to do well with my new found bank roll.

November 29, 2007, 7PM: Played 1 hour, Lost $420.00 at Chair Casino
$30/60 Omaha Hi-Lo

So, with my rough night comes a little loss.  I am getting in over my head again, so I did a snafu on my account and dump all the money, so I could not play for a couple of days.  Grounding myself and changing my attitued.  I am still definitely up, I have just done some stupid things in the past, and I wasn't about to get crazy again.

No-Limit Texas Hold'em

Alright let me start out by saying that this is my first time blogging my results and thoughts.  I have been playing poker seriously for about 3 years.  I started out grinding lower level buy-ins donking off money and trying to learn BR management and how I want to approach the game of poker in general. after going bust a few times I started grinding 20 dollar sit and go's with about a 500 dollar bank roll.  Not exactly "playing within my means" but I wasn't playing to make a living just to improve.  I started to do well...killing the 20's on UB and building up to about 2k.  I stayed playing 20's and then started playing mtt's.  I have always played mtts, but at this point I was taking time off of them because I wanted to fix some leak by grinding sit and go's.  So I started playing buy-ins 30 and under.  Winning begets winning and I started slowly getting better and learning how to beat the mid level mtt's.  My first win was for around 2k if I remember right, and I finally felt like things were coming together and they were. I started playing a few 109's here and there and I was final tabling with consistency. All my plays were golden...I was winning races and never felt better.  I won 2 seats to the WSOP (which I use to dream of back in the beginning when I was donking around on stars when I first started).  I actually was heads up about 6 times for 12k seats to the WSOP.  I was heads up 3 or 4 for seats to aruba, and starting to branch out to other sites.  At this time I was playing every tournament on the net on 4 sites (UB, FTP, PS, BD). I always seemed to do well on UB, and BD, and I think its because I was able to abuse players there because they tend to be more on the tight passive side (which fits my style being that i am AGGRO :) I am still trying to figure out FTP and Stars.  I go to vegas for the series, and succeed in partying well, partying often and donking off chips in the tournies.  Had such a blast and killed 2/5 NL But Ran SOOO shitty in tournaments.  Ran KK into AA twice in wsop events.  For the trip I finished -1k for the trip not including expenses which was good considering how much I spent on tournies at the venetian, bellagio and wsop events.  But I did party wayyyyyy to much and lived like a ballllerrrrrrr for 2 weeks and blew through a lot of money.  Got back from vegas still with a good BR online and started grinding Mtt's again (as well as sit and go's).  This is where my downfall would begin, and where I am today.  Since July I have hit a cold run of cards that I never knew was possible.  You always hear about guys going bust on rediculous down streaks, but I never thought it would happen to me.  How silly was I! I have not won a race deep in a tournament (wich few exceptions) since Vegas.  Its such a mental fuck and I have really tried hard to not let the running poorly change my play.  I have been through a lot of stages in this horendous down swing.  First I just figured it would turn around fairly soon so I just kept grinding not worrying to much considering I had been in down swings before (2-3 weeks or so).  Then my confidence started falling and frustration kicked in.  I was bitching to anyone who would listen about how badly I was running since Vegas, and if you know poker players they dont wanna hear this shit because bad beats are just part of the game we try to forget about asap and to hear someone bitch about it every day just brings us down too......its important to stay positive and have the right mindset at the tables! Next stage was realizing that the cards werent running well for me and to stop bitching about it and just play solid and not let it effect me.  So I continued to grind and watch PXF videos and whatever I could get my hands on to try and turn things around.  Fast forward to today and I believe I have fixed a lot of the holes in my game as far as sit and go's go.  In mtt's i have lost all confidence and am struggling to find my game again.  I tightened up A TON (which is not my game.. I am usually very good at mixing up my play in general).  Then as of the last week I have started getting back to my old aggro ways of trying to build a big chip stack early so I can take some beats late and not go bust.  I feel like I am back on track, but I keep running SO FUKIN BAD late in tourneys.  Final tables the 24+2 on Fulltilt and was in 3rd place with 6 left when I picked up AK, and ended up allin and ran into AA...thats fine with me.  I hate the bad luck of running into AA at a final table with such a big hand, but what drives me nuts are the bad beats that complete morons are putting on you.  Last night there were 16 left in the 20rb on FTP.  I had played very solid throughout the tournament.  I was aggro early to build up a nice stack, then just played very tight/aggro to get deep.  Pick up 88 in the BB against a laggy oponent.  I had 25k behind and the raise lagtard raises to 6k.....I decided to shove my 88 and get insta calleed by A8sooooted???!?...and obv hits an A on the river.  This keeps happening and I feel like its just such an uphill battle.  I still make my fair share of mistakes for sure, which I take note of and try to make as few as possible, but these beats are getting rediculous and at the complete wrong time.  I just find it SOOO frustrating to keep getting deep only to run like shit and have the disapointment EVERYNIGHT!!!! I come back every day ready for battle, but leave at the end of the day feeling defeated and I am not sure how to fix it.  I am just going ot keep grinding and see what poker has in store for me.  I am too damn stubborn to throw in the towel....I love this game so much, but its so demoralizing to keep gettting slammed down night after night.  Hope things turn for the better....I have to believe I can run well again and just play the way I know how and things will turn.  Keep improving and stay positive...WOW what a long post for my first.  Grinding some sit and go's this morning before heading back to work.
-back to battle!

November 27, 2007, 7AM: Played 6 hours, Made $2,147.00 at Chair Casino
$30 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (2nd out of 469 Players)

Yeah, i finally placed in one of these bad boys.  The Chair is treating me better than the Couch.  The tournaments are better and structured better.

I was playing some Omaha with Deiyuo, I bust just before the money, Deiyuo took it down.

Then I let him know that I was doing well in the holdem, so he kept a close eye on me.  It helps having someone watch you, you always play better.  Godd rooting!

I made a few mistakes, but nothing too crippling.  The ole shoulda woulda coulda type stuff.

When we were down to three players, there was one really tight and one really loose.  Loose had 500k, and tight had 300k, with me having 300k.  Out of know where, there was a raise pre between the two.  The flop comes KQ9, all spades.  Tight boy moves all in, and loose boy auto calls withh 66, 6 of spades.  Tight boy had 22.  Thank you loose boy for doing your job lol.

So now, the chip stacks are around 1 million to my 250k.  I fight and fight and steal to get up to 550k.  We check it down to see the flop, and I flop a weak ace.  He comes out firing and I go over the top....he reactes way too fast and pushes back.  I move all in, knowing he is weak, as he wanted to chop before and not really a good player.  He had 10-5 of diamonds.  He caught his diamond to win.  Ill take that race everytime.  So I played well, couple mistakes, but made up for them.  There is another hand I would tell you about, but maybe for just rambling section.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 424 hands and saw flop:
 - 27 out of 70 times while in big blind (38%)
 - 19 out of 67 times while in small blind (28%)
 - 40 out of 287 times in other positions (13%)
 - a total of 86 out of 424 (20%)
 Pots won at showdown - 20 of 24 (83%)
Pots won without showdown - 56

I had won over 90% of my hands going into 5 players.  That was crucial. But my hand selection was great and only made a few bad agro plays!

Yeah Me!

Re-focus

I have been playing more than I planned and more than I should while at school.  It hasn't actually affected my school work too much, but it has affected my play.  A lot of times I try to do work during tournaments or play too late knowing that I need to get up early the next morning.  I think these things have kept me from playing as well as I can at certain times.  Sooo, from now on I am going to attempt to play only one tourney a day during the week and save the high volume days for breaks.  I also want to try and focus more while playing and really try to play every tournament as best I can.  Alright, well that's that, now hopefully we will see the top threes come a little more often now!
