May 2, 2008, 8PM: Played 3 hours, Made $168.00 at Woody's
$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

Same place I played live last time I was home.  My friend backed me last time, but this time I bought in for my own $160.

One of the first hands I played I was in the cut off with JJ...EVERY person limped and without any info on anyone at the table I decided to limp and just play it for set value.  I didn't want to raise to $15 or $20 and still get 4 calls with no reads.  Maybe not the most +EV decision available but I wanted to settle in and get a better feel of the table.

Anyways, flop came 863 two hearts.  It checked to me and I bet $10.  I got just one call.  Turn was a 2s.  I bet $20 and she called again.  River was the 5h...she checked and I checked behind.  She showed Q8 and I took about a $40 pot to start the night.

After that I couldn't really do much and was pretty card dead for a couple hours.  I hovered between my initial $160 and $180 until my big hand of the night came up.

Super-loose pay-off-wizard raises from MP to $7 (small raise for the table).  There were two callers and I called from the BB with 7h3h.  Flop was 346 one heart.  I checked and the initial raisor bet $10.  There was one call on the button and I decided to call thinking a 7,5,or 3 were all good...and another heart might put me in a spot to draw for a huge pot.

Turn was a 5 (rainbow board)! I checked and the raisor bet $25.  The button called and I made it $70.  The raisor called and the button went all in for $5 more.....we each called.  The river was a 2 putting a 6 high straight on the board.  The guy in MP thought we were done since the button was all in and went to flip up his hand.  I only saw an A before the dealer stopped him.  I had $93 left and stuck it all in and MP insta-called playing the board :)

I took the side pot down but had to split with the button who had 77.  Still I moved from about $160 to $340 in the pot.  I was card dead for about 30 more minutes and decided to leave.

From a purely poker standpoint I should have stayed as I had a huge edge in the game.  But $328 is a lot of money for me and I was happy with the result of taking this shot.

one limp, SB folds, I am in bb with AT and 14x the big blind.  The limper had been limping weak so I shoved and he almost timed out before calling with K9 and then flopped a full house.

May 1, 2008, 11AM:
Delayed Main Event Final Table

I actually heard about this a few weeks ago but it has exploded on the forums over the last day or so.  Check it out:

By Gary Mihoces, USA TODAY You've just made the final table in July in the Main Event at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. You're one of nine players with a shot at millions. You're hot. Now you have to wait until Nov. 9 for the next hand to be dealt. No problem, says two-time Main Event champion Johnny Chan, who welcomes the WSOP's move to delay the final table to facilitate a Nov. 11 ESPN telecast within hours of the tournament's finish. MORE ON HIATUS: 117-day wait will allow for 'almost virtually real time' telecast "Poker is a game of skill. The hands are random. … It's how you play your hand. I don't believe in hot streaks," Chan says. Past final tables have been played in July, with ESPN airing its taped show in November. Chan says the new format will allow players to connect with sponsors who "come to them and say, 'Hey, wear this patch or wear this logo. We'll give you X amount of dollars.' " While poker pro Daniel Negreanu also applauds the timetable, he says it will make for a "different dynamic" at the final table. "You're going to see some really kind of more sophisticated play," he says. The WSOP is a 55-event series of tournaments that begins May 30. ESPN will begin airing taped broadcasts of various events July 22. Negreanu expects players at the final table to monitor those. "They're going to watch the ESPN broadcasts and go, 'Oh, did you notice that? When he does this, he's bluffing,' " Negreanu says. He says players also can get coaching. He likens it to Super Bowl coaches getting two weeks to make a game plan: "Great players and amateurs alike will have an opportunity to really devise schemes and plans for how they're going to play." In a news release issued by PokerStars, an online poker site, 2004 Main Event champion Greg Raymer says he is torn about the new format because of the potential for coaching. "It might be huge for the continued growth of poker; however, the down side is this long gap allows the players to become completely different people between the time they make the final table and when they play it," says Raymer, a member of Team PokerStars. For ESPN, there also will be a change in the dynamic. The title figures to be won in the early hours of Nov. 11, with the two-hour telecast of the final table set for 9 p.m. ET. "The champion will be crowned on the day of air. We're very excited about this change," ESPN senior producer Jamie Horowitz says. ESPN will air a special Nov. 4 showing what the players have done between the July determination of the final nine and the final table. "We want to detail that journey," Horowitz says. What if something happens that precludes a player from playing at the final table? The WSOP has accounted for that. A player who does not appear will have his chips "blinded off," which means they will be paid into mandatory bets for each hand. When a competitor's last chip is played, he will be paid for where he finishes. Two-time Main Event champion Doyle Brunson would prefer each player to be allowed an alternate, "somebody that's not considered to be a player with abilities above their own." Though Brunson, 74, has reservations about the delay being "overkill," he'd have no qualms about having to deal with it. "No, I'll try to hang on another four months," he said, laughing.

People on the forums are pretty pissed.  Complaints about bad players getting coaching, greedy Harrah's and ESPN, what to do if someone dies in the 4 month hiatus, and possible collusion have people saying the idea is crazy.

Personally I like it though.  Everyone going into the tournament understands the situation.  I also heard that everyone would be awarded 9th place money during the 4 months so they don't have to walk away empty-handed.  This would also, in my opinion, really help grow the game.  There could be a ton of exposure for the final tablists and a psudo-live telecast of the final table would be interesting for your average joe that doesn't play.

I understand there are downsides to it, but, if it helps grow the game and bring in more money to the poker world, then I am all for it.  If it bombs, go back to the old way next year.

April 30, 2008, 11PM: Played 4 hours, Made $187.60 at Full Tilt
$10 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (5th out of 335 Players)

Jaspinal sent me $9 of the $11 buyin to this knock out tourney.  The bounties were $2 and I had a whole, whopping 1 bounty (I don't know how I knock out just one guy despite growing my chips from 1,500-85,000 at the high point).  So I was in the tourney for free after that bounty.

Ran good in the middle part of the tourney.  Felt like I made good moves but everytime I got it in the middle I was coolered.....only to river a two-outter :) Bout time.

With 10 left I was chip leader at my table and raised in position with AK...flop was Q65 two hearts.  He checked I made a standard continuation bet and he called.  I had him on a flush draw.  Turn was an off-suit T and he checked again.  I fired out another bet (can't remember all the sizes but this left me with 55k from the 85k i started the hand with).  He called.  Now I was worried because I didn't think he would call with just a flush draw on the turn there.  River was an off-suit 2.  He checked, and I couldn't fire another bullet so I just checked behind preserving a still healthy 55k stack.  He flipped over the KT hearts...so he made the pair to go with his flush draw on the turn.  I don't know if he woulda called my river shove but it woulda been interesting.  Just so sick that a T is the only card that can come off that loses me anymore money.  A heart=I check/fold...A non-ten and I most likely win the pot with my second bullet.

Anyways, made the final table in 4th of 9 and with 7 left lost a race to a short stack (1/2 my stack)...couldn't get anything going after that.

Happy with the score.  Played well, but def. ran really good for the most part.
