January 6, 2008, 11PM: Played 3 hours, Made $190.00 at Mardi Gras Casino
$2 No-Limit Texas Hold'em

40 dollar max buy in table. NL with 300 pot-cap.

This was my first live table of this format. I don't normally enjoy NL holdem, but with everyone starting out with the same, it's easier for me to build a stack without having to risk a ton of chips early.

Made some great reads. Called some large bets with middle pair since the maniac alcoholic lady was ramming. She was on the draw and Ic alled her bluff on the river for a nice pot. Another hand, I have AQ and raise preflop with some callers. Flop comes 848 rainbow. I checkraise the button and the button calls. Turn is a king and I fire out. He mucks qq. Felt good to run a bluff through

January 4, 2008, 11PM: Played 2 hours, Broke Even at Mardi Gras Casino
$3/6 Texas Hold'em

Short handed slow action game. Was hard to beat the rake

January 3, 2008, 11PM: Played 3 hours, 30 minutes, Made $115.00 at Mardi Gras Casino
$3/6 Texas Hold'em

Was stuck out of the gates. Tried to run a few hands through but kept runing into the "middle pair Sherrif". Got my head back on my shoulders and just waited for good spots. Flopped two sets, both turning into boats so that helped. I feel like my play is getting back to the high level it used to be. It took me several hours of play to regain my confidence, trust my reads, and quit playing so many marginal hands.

January 2, 2008, 1AM: Played 3 hours, Broke Even at Mardi Gras Casino
$3/6 Texas Hold'em

Got trapped in some preflop rasing wars. I should have been able to identify these situations before commiting chips with marginal hands. I did go on the heat and make a few big hands later to get even.

December 29, 2007, 9PM: Played 2 hours, Lost $10.00 at Mardi Gras Casino
$3/6 Texas Hold'em

Went down to play since there was a christmas party going on. Never played a big pot. Ate dinner and went home to sleep.

December 25, 2007, 2PM: Played 10 hours, Lost $50.00 at Bellagio, Las Vegas
$4/8 Texas Hold'em

Best poker I've played in months. I had so much patients and focus it was amazing.

I played one hand every 2 rotations around the table. Cold cold cold starting hands. Flopped one set all day. Felt like I played the best cards of my life to only lose 50 bucks. Feel like my game made a huge step in the right direction finally.

$4/8 Texas Hold'em

Didn't play long this session either. Got frustrated early and decided to quit before torking off my stack.

December 20, 2007, 9PM: Played 1 hour, 30 minutes, Made $105.00 at Bellagio, Las Vegas
$4/8 Texas Hold'em

Wow. What a poker room. This place is just massive. Tons of action 24/7.

Played very distracted the whole time considering a huge WPT event just got over that night and there was a big game going on that I got to watch between Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Eli Ellezera, Gus Hanson, Shieky Shakan, and others. They were playing 3000-6000 mixed games. What a treat to get to see that game in person.

Anyways I hit a couple big hands and went home to sleep after a long trip into town.

November 26, 2007, 3PM:
Low-limit poker vs. Montana NL poker

This seems to be one of the major issues with Montana and poker as it evolves over time.

I listen (mind you I'm usually working or trapped) to these poeple from all different skill levels/experiences of all types of poker games and I can't decide which game is better to play in terms of making the most money: low-limit hold'em or montana NL hold'em ($300 pot cap, if the pot is made before the river, all players just roll thier hands over and they bring the board and whoever wins wins).

The big detail I keep hearing is protection of "big hands". Now most of the debate I'm exsposed to is over "why is 36 off cracking my black aces EVERY TIME?" Now it's obvious to me how these low-limit games work. You get 9 players at a table with maybe one or two of them who have a clue, and then the majority of the table is made up of compulsive bad gamblers/donkeys just having fun. I've logged lots of hours playing that game and have seen very consistent positive results.

Now lets look at the NL game. You get a few different people at the table. Your 'entertainment' players typically stay away from this game since they don't want to lose thier bankroll on one hand. However, the remaining players at the table are still bad compulsive gamblers with a dose of agression. I don't see a significant difference in how bad or good this game is played. I still watch the black aces get stomped by A-wheel, 36 off, K9 suited.

So which game is really more profitable? Yes you can go on the heat and win $1000 at the NL table where you will never do that in one session in a 3-6 holdem game. But you're also not going to lose $150 on one hand when you make all the right desicions and the donkey calls and cracks you anyways. Also, you can read most any poker book and they all have some comment on how much a 'successful' player should be winning in a paticular limit poker game, but I've never read anything about how much you should expect to win at a NL cash game table.

PS: if you see me in real life and feel the need to tell me about your "bad beats", first, remove your head from your ass and have a nice piping hot cup of shut the fuck up. Log your bad beats, dont force people to listen to them.
