$390 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (54th out of 70 Players)

Marc and i sat for a 30€ sat one seat rewarded, we agreed to share the ticket if one of us won the sat. we ended the sat 1st and 2nd and we decided to buy another one for 300€.
So each of us paid 180e for the ticket instead of 300e.
1€=1.3USD

Starting stack 3K

my stack at the moment : 2.4k

Me AKd Vs ?

blinds 50-100

my position UTG+1

i raise 300, called one time one seat behind...

flop opens 9 10 A no flush draw

i bet 500 ... called

turn is a 8

and i wonder what he can have but not for long... i push the rest of my stack in the middle

... called instantly.

and i am like.. you have JQ?... that is what he had sob!

And i guess i can just go back home ! (i'll come back on the key hand a bit later)

I wondered... what went wrong on that spot ? and generally on the tourney?

First of all, very early in the tournament i miss an occasion to double up my stack had K8o on the small blind but i fold pre flop cause pot was raised 150 (blinds only 25-25, and i don't like this hand much and my position is shit). On that hand the board contained two kings and my K8o was clear best and players gave action on that hand... so clear mistake to fold ! (but i didn't know it at the moment)...which leads to one of my questions : "how often should i call with marginal hands on the beginning on a tournament especially ona multiway pot?"

So i guess this was the first mistake.

In poker as in chess, openings are a phase i am not good at. at least i realize that.

The second mistake was more a strategic one... from the beginning of the tourney, i actually did call too many hands (about one third of my hands) and raised about one third of my hands... the results on the raised hands was better than hands i called.

I feel that i should have fold or raised (?!) some hands that i called with (by calling i didn't take control of these hands and i didn't hit).

If i get back to the hand i lose to the tournament and the way i played it.

So i have AK diamonds UTG+1
blinds just became 50-100 and my stack shrinked from 3K to 2.4K.

i raised pre flop 300 which i think was not a good amount... i should at least have raised 400 or 500 or limped in waiting for someone to raise so i could reraise...

But i raised 300 and it's called by one player.
the pot is now 750 and i have 2.1K chips in front of me
Flop comes A 10 9
i speak first and bet 500 2/3 of the pot ... i give him 500/1250 or 1/2.5.
on a straight draw he is a bit short to pay 500... but if he thinks that he can get all my chips (and that is what happens, he's right) he calls and the pot is now 1750 and my "remaining stack" is 1600 chips.

Turn appears 8... and without thinking more i push the rest of my chips in the pot... instantly called.

What went wrong on that specific move?
I didn't like my betting preflop but i don't think it was a big mistake.
But on the flop i decided to ignore the straight draw and didn't bet in consequences (check or all in or an overbet)
on the turn, i ignored a very possible straight (which was real) and pushed all in.

To sum up this "go back home move", i'd say that i wanted to see my opponent with a hand like AQ AJ KJ or a high pair ?

An Ax was a possibility but to be honest i didn't think of anything else... i wanted to see him on that (even if i had my doubts) and i blinded myself (big mistake).

In addition after being involved in about ten moves till that one i lost 600 chips and never succeed in building a stack. If i had doubled up, i hope i would have played this hand differently.

Sometimes, when i don't really understand a chess position, I have this tendency of playing an obvious move (in poker it would be betting two third of the pot on a A 9 10 flop) this is an obvious move but which does not take into account a straight draw). In chess, it might be developping position instead of responding to the direct threat or not taking into account the complexity of the center or whatever...

In chess as in poker, we have the possibility to review all the moves you made and after a little analysis you just realize that your move was not strong at all but the opposite

That's what i realized with my poker tournament 300e Buy in.

Let's get back to studies.
