February 9, 2008, 11AM:
Slump

My slump continues.

Haven't landed in the money since early this week and it really gets to you after awhile. I've identified problem areas and am working towards correcting them.

The biggest issue I noticed was that I would lose my patience really early for some reason and would begin playing marginal hole cards which would lead to bad calls and thus, early eliminations.

I will say that it's not entirely my fault though, these are two hands that I played earlier today:

February 7, 2008, 8PM: Played 1 hour, at Absolute Poker
$0.50 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (5th out of 9 Players)

Another bad showing. Really not proud of my play in this one, I was making way too many bad calls. Stayed tight with which cards I played but my betting was terrible.

February 6, 2008, 8PM: Played 1 hour, at Absolute Poker

There was no way that I was going to let this night pass by completely without at least attempting to win back some of my cash.

Now... when he raised $5 after the flop, I called because I had two top pair and the size of the bet made me think that he was trying to just steal the blinds in the face of a strong flop.

When the turn came down and we both checked, I felt confident in my two pair. When my full house came on the river, I had zero idea that he was carrying a better house.

Now... if a mistake was made, I think it was after the flop when I called the raise.

Good call or 'dude, are you kidding me?' stupid call?

ETA: On second thought, what was I thinking? He had a set and he could've had quads for all I knew. That was a stupid call.

ETA Again: Ok, I'm coming to the realization that I'm a below average/decent tournament player but I'm an absolutely dreadful cash game player.

How do I fix this?

February 6, 2008, 9AM:
Big Blind Raises

Got an invite for a $10 buy in tournament last night. AP qualifier for a 75K tournament. Not sure if I'm going to enter, not quite sure if my skill level is good enough for that tournament.

Question... what kind of situations would make you raise from the big blind?

February 5, 2008, 7PM: Played 2 hours, Made $1.35 at Absolute Poker
$0.50 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (6th out of 45 Players)

Just wasn't a very good night for me. Only a couple of hands really stood out, otherwise I was really disapointed with my lack of aggressive play. The vast majority of my raises tonight were just big blinds or I would limp into hands.

Here's the summary of one hand that bugged me:

1943 - Posts small blind $25
SCORPIOEYEZ - Posts big blind $50
*** POCKET CARDS ***
Dealt to SCORPIOEYEZ [3s As]

LANYBUG - Raises $100 to $100
EZYMNYPOKER - Folds
1943 - Calls $75
SCORPIOEYEZ - Calls $50
PACKRAT42 - Calls $50
*** FLOP *** [9c Js 2s]

SCORPIOEYEZ - Checks
PACKRAT42 - Checks
LANYBUG - Bets $100
1943 - Calls $100
SCORPIOEYEZ - Calls $100
PACKRAT42 - Calls $100
*** TURN *** [9c Js 2s] [5s]
1943 - Checks
SCORPIOEYEZ - Bets $100
PACKRAT42 - Folds
LANYBUG - All-In(Raise) $545 to $545
1943 - Folds
SCORPIOEYEZ - Calls $445
*** RIVER *** [9c Js 2s 5s] [5h]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
LANYBUG - Shows [9h 9s] (Full house, nines full of fives)
SCORPIOEYEZ - Shows [3s As] (Flush, ace high)
LANYBUG Collects $1890 from main pot

I bet I could've won that hand if I had been more aggressive on the turn.

Was chip leader around the halfway mark. I know that means nothing but it's still fun to say.

Oh well, tomorrow I'll try again.

February 5, 2008, 6PM: Played 1 hour, Lost $0.50 at Absolute Poker
$0.50 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (7th out of 10 Players)

Got blinded out fairly quickly. Wasn't hitting any good hands and didn't feel like I was ever in a good position to play aggressive. I'll try again in another.

February 4, 2008, 6PM: Played 2 hours, Made $5.06 at Absolute Poker
$0.60 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament (2nd out of 45 Players)

Decided to join a 45 person sit and go tonight. No limit Texas Hold em (I swear I'm gonna learn to get better at other poker games but hold em first).

Anyways... note worthy hands:

Blinds are 75/150 and I checked 8s Qs from the BB. Me and one other player in it, flop comes [Ah 10s 4s]. I open with a BB bet, he raises to 1350 and I call. [6d] on fourth street, he goes all in for 1280 and I fold losing half my stack chasing a flush draw.

At one point was down to 800 chips at the final table and got back in it.

Blinds at 300/600, One other player raises it to 1800 and I call from the BB with [10d Ah]. Flop is [7c Jc Ad], I open with 1200, they raise to 3600 and I go all in to call. Turn and River come down [4h] [8c] and I'm suddenly in the top half of chip leaders when he flips over 9A.

Coolest hand of the night was with four players remaining. I get dealt [Ks 6s] in middle position. I'm the chip leader at this point. Fold, raise to 3600, re-raise all in to 5634. I call and the first player calls the re-raise. Flop is [4s 9h Jd], I check, first player goes all in with his remaining 901 and I call. Two players are now all in against me. Turn and River come down [Kd] [8d]. One player flips over QQ and the other flips over [Ac 7c]. I knock out two players and instantly start the heads up action.

Heads up action went back and forth for awhile and got interrupted by a break which was annoying. Eventually I got outplayed and couldn't recover but I still managed to take second, I'm happy with this.
