Whats on my mind 3
So, the last chapter of whats on my mind would like to talk about something I saw on TV tonight.
I was watching poker after dark and I ran into a situation where Jamie Gold (Donk) was up against Chan. He had KQ suited and Chan had wired 10's. Jamie professed that his pot odds were 2 to 1 and that would make him the favorite in the hand if it was a coin toss.
What poker players don't realize is that pot odds don't dictate a good or bad call. So many novice player over think this situation and will make the call because of one variable. But, yet you must take in consideration if you are the caller or the raiser, and if you are in the money or not. Is it a short tournament, a long one...a cash game for all the money?
PEOPLE...poker is not just about the numbers, it is about timing and the ability to read a situation without using number as the number one variable.
I understand that numbers are a crucial part of of the game, but not the most important part.
Don't forget what you are playing for and that sometimes the stats are not as important as going in with the best hand.
Be smart...play well....win money!
Peace!!!!

Along with Pokerstove, one of the biggest resources I have found helpful is Pocketfives.com There are often helpful articles posted by players (primarily NL tourney players) and the forums are pretty good. A lot of times people just call each other donks for shoving in a spot or folding in a spot which gets annoying but there is good info there as well. Most of the time I post a hand here I post a hand there as well...can't hurt right?
Also, I have posted on twoplustwo.com in the past which has been helpful.
PokerXFactor.com is a great resource but there are only a few videos you can watch for free. I have been tempted to buy a subscription to this site as it sounds like one of the best out there.
Cardrunners is a good site too (primarily for cashgames...NOT just NL either).
Thats about all I know, I use the forum sites the most since I don't like to cough up the dough.

Good stuff 85. It seems as if you are in tap with the online thing.
Do you have any other sites that you would like to share that have helped make you a better online player. I am sure the masses would appreciate.
That goes for anyone else who knows of sites that are good learning tools.

Definetly Daryl. When playing online you have to rely a lot more on the math. I have limited experience live, and I feel that my solid play is enough to overcome most of the bad players I have played against in the past, but being able to tap into a lot of other important aspects could only make me more successful.
Even with what Jfrostman is talking about you can apply math. It may seem intuitive to understand that a player is raising a lot so you may decide to act differently. But essentially what you are doing is expanding the range the player is raising with so the odds you have the better hand go up as well.
There are several sites that are great tools for analyzing an opponent's range. One of these is Pokerstove. You can plug in what hands you believe your opponents range includes your hand and it can tell you what odds you need to make a call that has positive equity. I have said before on here that I think understanding your opponent's range, fold equity, and the appropriate times to pound the short stacks are the most important aspects of MTTs online, and each of these things are rooted in math.
There are very few, non-math based tells online. You may be able to pick up on the quickness of someone's bet or something they say in the chat but these are not very reliable. ANything else you can come up with is rooted in math even if you don't think through it that way and it seems intuitive.
Live is a completely different ball game though. I think the extra factors that can be used in live play are of enormous importance and seperate those players that have a good knowledge of the math from those who can be big winners. Look at the guys who have been doing it professionally for an extended period of time....there iare obviously other tools they use. I know for a fact if I were to start playing more live I would really need to focus on these parts of the game because my understanding of them is very limited.

I guess for all the online players, it is harder to read the situation becuase you can't see the person. You can take notes, but that still lacks so much info that you can get when you can see the person. So, in retrospect....you have to rely on the odds more. True? Not true?

I use the numbers as a basis of understanding where I sit in the hand, but knowing a players tendencies is much more valuable than knowing some percentage chance you have to win.
If I only have a 20% (or some other small odds) chance of having the better hand but the player I am up against likes to raise a lot I may have to do something about it and make a move.

D - What do you want to discuss? I think it is a well known fact that Gold is an irrational play by the seat of his pants player.
