WSOP Fantasy Bet

My friend and I picked teams again this year.  Sorry to OPL for not posting/making this available for everyone.  It was semi-last minute, and, basically, I forgot.  Scoring (same as last time):

Cash 100
Final Table 300
3rd 500
2nd 700
1st 1,000

If the event is a 5k we multiply the points by 1.5.
If it's 10k we multiply by 2.
The 50k Player's Championship (8-game mix) and the 25k NL 6-Max will be multiplied by 3.
Women's, Seniors, and TOC events are not included.

Me----------------------Ryan

Daniel Negreanu---------Phil Ivey
Barry Greenstein--------Gus Hansen
Phil Hellmuth-----------JC Tran
Jason Mercier-----------Erick Lindgren
Jeffrey Lisandro--------Scott Clements
Mike Matusow------------Allen Cunningham
Chris Ferguson----------Isaac Baron
Gavin Griffin-----------Steve Gross
Daniel Alaei------------Ted Forrest
Annette Obrestad--------Antonio Esfandiari

Overall, I like my team.  I think it is really important to get players that can play all the games as they will have a much better chance of final tabling a 300 person Stud8 tourney than a 4k person NLH tourney.  I think Mercier at #4 was a stretch for me.  Also, not sure how much Ferguson, Griffin and Alaei are going to be playing.  I wish I could take Bonomo and Binger in place of two of my later picks in hindsight.  For Ryan, I think Gus at #2 was really reaching.  I also wonder how much AC, Forrest, and Antonio will play.

I destroyed Ryan in this bet two years ago, but we didn't do it last year.  I think the teams are a little more even this year.  I do think I have a slight edge however.

Play Money Legend

Ay ay ay.  So I took today off because I had several things to do for Mother's Day.  But, while watching basketball for a little bit (Wow Rondo 28pts, 18rbds, 13 assts or something like that)I fired up a couple play money tournaments for fun.  One was a 2k 90 person SNG.  Won that.  Another was a 2.5k 367 person MTT and won that.  And now tonight I played a 1,155 person 250 play chip 6-Max tourney.  Just finished winning that.  3/3 today.  Wish I could post these results in the real money side.  Either way it was finally fun playing poker with it not meaning anything.

Dream Schedule

I am still super low...$3.07 right now...just playing $1 MTTs hoping to hit something otherwise will reload in a few weeks.  Either way, I am looking forward to the day where I have $75+ on FTP and Stars and can play the following schedule:

4:20 FTP $2 DS
5:00 Stars $2.5 12.5k Guar.
5:05 FTP $2 DS
5:20 Stars $1 1k Cap
5:55 FTP $2 DS
6:00 Stars $1 4k Guar.
6:20 FTP $2
7:00 Stars $1 3k Guar.
8:00 Stars $0.5
8:15 FTP $1 DS
8:15 Stars $2 4k Guar.
10:00 Stars $.25 $100 added
10:05 FTP $2
11:00 Stars $2 5k Guar.
11:05 FTP $2
12:00 Stars $2 3k Guar.
1:20 FTP $2 DS
1:30 FTP $1 Ferg

18 tournaments.  Total buy-ins: $28.25.  Average buy-in: about $1.50.  Would be about 12 hours of play.  If I were to get up over like $150 on a site I would probably include $3's and $2 6-maxes and $1 rebuys.

Time to Refocus

My first 3 weeks or so back to poker have been pretty rough.  I started out up and down just a little bit, but about a week ago I hit a pretty sick downswing.  I think there are several reasons for this.

1) Bad luck.  There is no question in my mind that I have run pretty bad in tournaments and really bad in cash.

2) Tilting.  I have been way to quick to tilt of money in the cash games.  I get coolered in one pot and before you know it I have 4 tables open and I am playing very poorly trying to win big pots.

3) Bad play.  I feel like I am playing close to how I did back when I was doing well in tournaments.  I know there are things I can do better though.  In the cash games...I definitely need to improve.  I have never really played very much cash, but I have been much more interested in it lately.  However, I know that I am not playing as well as I would like to.

That being said.  I am going to set some goals for May.  I will be able to play quite a bit in May, so I want to start out in the right direction and with the right mind set.

1) Cash: I am going to dig through posts on 2+2 and really work on leaks in my cash game play.  I am going to stick to proper bankroll management.  I am going to stick to 2 tables for at least 5,000 hands to make sure I am playing well before I try to add tables.

2) MTTs: Up my volume.  Focus on identifying weak spots at the table that I can pick on/isolate/reraise/etc.  Final table something for the love of God!

Unfortunately I am in a situation where I am close to broke on FTP.  If I get lucky and win something really soon great, but most likely I will need to redeposit which is something I have never really had to do.  I am also pretty broke right now.  I owe my mom for school and whatnot so I would most likely be limited to approx. a $40 deposit from an upcoming paycheck.  I would also love to start mixing in tourneys on Stars, but I am going to wait to do that until I am out of debt.

Most important things in cash games

In cash games, I think the most important things are as follows in order;

- bankroll management
- always playing regarding the EV
- reading the tells well and bluffing

For the 1st to the 3rd, if you do not succeed in the previous one(s), the rest does not matter. For example, if you can perfectly read the tells but you have very bad bakroll management and you do not care about the EV, you lose in the long term.

For example, take Tom Dwan, he always starts a sessoin with nearly 1/15 of his entire bankroll, never more. He sometimes loses a million in a few day, but it does not matter, 14/15 of his money is still with him. Also, he usually plays regarding the EV, does not bet when he has odds for winning %45 or less. And being the third, he reads the opponents well.

I have failed so much at the first one, and also at the second one. Also I very often was on tilt.

---------------------------------------------------------

I have registered to a new poker room, Juicy Stakes poker. Also, I play on Aspinalls Poker. I have heard that on cake network, only one room allowed for rake back, I hope raketherake.com and the room accepts my rakeback deal for Juicy Stakes Poker. Otherwise, I plan to play on Aspinalls and Cake poker.

Looong Time No Post

It has been forever since I have played poker consistently.  My student teaching a year ago was extremely time-consuming and by the time I was finished I had lost the desire to put time into poker.  This past year I have been substitute teaching (as I was unable to find a full time teaching position in Michigan's terrible economy) and coaching basketball.  With a summer ahead where my only responsibilities will be attempting to find a full time job and working at the summer camp again, I am eager to begin playing poker once more!

During the last week or so I have been trying to satty into some of the real money tourneys on FTP and Stars with my frequent player points from past years.  So far I have been unsuccessful, but I anticipate depositing money and putting in some time at the tables this summer.

After a brief glance at the OPL site it seems like there has been very little strategy discussions.  Maybe I will be able to spark a few again :) Hope everyone is doing well.

Will be back -

It's been a while since making any entries - and will add my last few SNG wins sometime this week. Afterwards it may be a while before returning to mypokerlog.com cause I'm playing very little these days. Need to watch more, read more, learn more, and play less. Then come back with my new and improved style - or at least a better view. I want to focus on the math, stats and betting for value. Because playing with lost hope and a pipe dream isn't a winning strategy.

I'm lazy!

Ok ok! I'm gonna start posting again.  Been long enough and I think it will help my play.  Zeppies poker room is doing really good and we have been really busy.  But, still have time to put in a few seesions every now and then.  Plus, online is always available.  I am really not sure where I am at since my last post.  Should be up though.  Had some good sessions in Missoula, and haven't taken any big losses in my own game.  And online has been ok.  So, here we go again!

I Run Bad

I Run Bad. I've been running sooo bad lately, its sick. I know that now that I'm playing alot more than I ever have, and it's bound to happen. That's why I keep plugging away, and that's why I started keeping this blog. I know I have holes in my game(over playing premium preflop hands, when if I stop and think about the hand, I'm clearly not good anymore), but overall I think I'm a good player. Just need some fine tuning.

This is how my typical 6-8 hour sessions have been going for me lately. When I first sit down, I get some decent to good cards, win some pots(although nothing too big, as everyone is trying to feel me out) build up a good table image and I go up a bit, maybe even double up over a few hours. Then I go ridiculously card dead. I don't necessarily stop getting good starting hands. I still get small-medium pocket pairs, suited connectors, sometimes even aq. So I play it properly(for the most part) preflop, either a limp, a raise, whatever. The flop completely misses my hand. If I raised, I will often cbet it, but I get called(or raised) and I'm done. Then after a few hours, I start picking up some pots again(not always having the hands to do so), and I will get a premium hand. Not always Aces or Kings, sometimes its a pathetic preflop hand, but I'll flop huge, and I get so enamored with my holding that I stop playing poker and trying to figure out what other people could have. I think I have top two pair, it has to be good! So I get it all in, either by my betting, or calling, and I'm busto.

I know I need to start bluffing more, but it's hard when I'm so short stacked. Maybe I need to start buying in for $200 again. That would leave me with enough behind that there's a threat of another bet on the next street if I get called.

I need to start taking stabs at these limped pots. Up til now, I've shown no interest in the pots with just $10 in them, because I shouldn't bet more than the pot size, and for a bet so small it's bound to get called. But if I get caught trying to steal small pots for small bets, maybe I'll get more action with my big hands.

I also need to stop checking the flop. I check it when I hit a big hand, which is natural, but I check it probably 85% of the time. I never bet at a paired board(even if I have trips), and I think it's cost me some money.

All in all, I need some work on my game, but I'm very frustrated right now. Both with the way the cards are going for me, and how I'm playing them.
