My Shot At 5/10 NL
This is for everybody who's going to be asking me "What happened?"
So, I finally decided to take my shot at 5/10 NL. I decided to sit with $800, thinking I'd feel more comfortable than sitting with $500. For the weekend, I was already down $1255, so I was pretty much looking to do some quick damage and get the hell outta there.
In about 30 minutes, I was already up to $2600. Second hand of the game, I limped UTG with pocket twos, called a raise, flopped a set, and doubled up off kings on a ten-high flop. Few hands later, I got pocket queens on the button. There was a raise from middle position, and I reraised, got called. Flop came jack high, and my opponent check-called me down the whole way, and I won. Few hands later, I turned the nut flush and got paid off there too. So, all in all, I was doing well. Actually, I could've left right then and there.
Then, I got moved to another table, sat down and got dealt AKs flopped the nut flush, but didn't get much action. I was on a rush, so I wanted to stay. Later on I got pocket kings in the big blind, but ran into a set of 9s. I didn't pay him off all the way, but I was kinda disappointed in myself that I didn't have the discipline to fold when he reraised me $400 on top of my $250 bet on the flop. I could've saved $400 right there, but I called, check on the turn, and he went all-in for about $1700, and I had to fold. He was nice enough to show me his set of 9s. Later on, I flopped an ace with AJo and A7 rivered his two-pair. Lost a bet on the end there. So, after a while I was down to about $1400.
And then came the hand of the night. I limped with Ac9c in early position. There were 2 callers then the cutoff made it $50 to go. 2 players called before it got to me. I called. Then another player behind me called also. 5-way to the flop, $200 pot already. Flop comes [9s, 6c, 5c]. I have top-pair and the nut flush draw. Two players check before me, I check, another player checks behind me, the preflop raiser makes it $125. Two players before me fold. I check-raise to $325. Seat 7 (player after me) is really pissed off for some reason. Like he wants to call but he shouldn't, and he eventually calls all frustrated. I don't put this guy on a made straight or set here, most likely a draw. The preflop raiser thinks about it for a while and folds. Turn is an ace of diamonds, giving me top two-pair (board: [Ad, 9s, 6c, 5c]. I'm first to act, I make the same bet of $325, and seat 7 instantly reraises all-in for $1700 or so. I had about $750 or so left at this point. Odds wise, the pot is now at around $2200, so if I believe I'm beat, I still have 3-to-1 odds to call here on my boat/flush draw. But, actually, I didn't play this hand by odds. I played it by feel. I didn't put this guy on a set or made straight. I wasn't intimidated at all by his reraise, and I called instantly. The river came the seven of spades, and seat 7 instantly yells, "Straight!" He flips over 8c4c, and I double-take the board, which is [7s, Ad, 9s, 6c, 5c]. I'm in shock. He had a gut-shot straight-flush draw the whole way, and 4-outered me on the river for a $3000 pot. Wow. I ask the dealer how much more. The dealer tells me I'm covered, so I push the rest of my stack into the middle and left the high-stakes area.
If it wasn't for that 7 on the river, I'm up $900 for the day, and I just get up and leave. But instead, I'm down $2100. Ouch. But that's poker.
So, that was my shot at 5/10 NL. I definitely feel like I could play the game comfortably. There are sharks at that game, but there are also huge fish. I just need a bankroll, obviously, to withstand the variance. I won't be getting that bankroll anytime soon though, haha. I'll probably be out of the poker game for a month or two, and then I'll grind the 1/2 NL again. Then we'll take it from there. Wish me luck, and see you in a couple of weeks.
